As part of helping facilitate Zine Workshops across UAL as part of The Big Welcome, I sat and made a small zine with the available materials, which included a lot of UAL promotional materials. I am always surprised to see what emerges from cutting out materials that draw my attention, in a physical reflection that can draw unconscious elements to the fore.
This zine particularly showed me the amount of hopelessness trying to change a large system like the university can engender. “Small Stories” shows how individual voices and emotions can be swallowed under official rhetoric. And the open-ended quote to end the zine, “I wanted to ” leaves room for that hope to grow but also the sense of regret or yearning towards something.
